Sunway Sees Upsurge in Domestic Tourism

Sunway City Kuala Lumpur,13 July 2020

In tandem with the government’s reopening of tourism sectors and interstate travel, Sunway has seen an increase of domestic tourism into Sunway City Kuala Lumpur following the launch of its “Ke Sana Ke Sini Ke Sunway” campaign on 6 July 2020.

Till date, it has surpassed 10,000 room nights sold with 5,000 room nights sold within the first 72 hours alone after its launch. Sunway forecasts the momentum to grow healthily as domestic travelers take advantage to visit local tourist destinations following the lifting of movement control order (MCO/ CMCO).

This is in line with national trends. In the latest figure presented by Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, the tourism sector has seen an upsurge, with hotel reservations nationwide showing an increase of up to 30.74% until June.

Domestic tourism is a sizeable market. The domestic tourism expenditure grew 11.5% to RM103.2b in 2019, the fourth consecutive year of double-digit growth prior to the pandemic outbreak. Amidst the restrictions on international travel, Sunway also hopes to shift a portion of outbound tourism expenditure to domestic tourism expenditure.

Sunway Malls and Theme Parks Chief Executive Officer HC Chan said, “Certainly, there is an enormous upside for domestic tourism when one looks at both numbers. On domestic front, you see a healthy growth while on the outbound, you see potential conversions as international borders are still largely closed. Unquestionably, from our numbers, we are already seeing that since the launch of the campaign with our Pyramid Hotel registering booking occupancy of 80%”

Sunway’s Ke Sana Ke Sini Ke Sunway is a domestic tourism package at Sunway City Kuala Lumpur priced at RM499, which is 70% off the normal price of RM1,599. It includes a two-night stay at Sunway Pyramid Hotel for two adults and two children, entrance tickets to Sunway Lagoon for two adults and two children, and welcome treats and Family Fun Activity vouchers worth RM200 from Sunway Pyramid. The campaign ends on 20 July.

The package for the locals is also in line with the government’s effort in boosting tourism with the RM1,000 tax relief for domestic tourism as announced by the government earlier.

HC Chan added, “As Sunway is an integrated development with mall, theme park, hotel and various businesses; it makes sense to leverage and deliver a better value proposition as far as the tourism experience is concerned. And this means, infusing the three businesses to work seamlessly to provide an attractive and value-for-money domestic tourism package.”
